In the midst of a pandemic where social interactions have drastically declined, there is a lack of physical contact and the affective feeling that comes with it. The goal of this project was to build an interaction that would connect 2 or more people remotely, from physical actions to screens reactions.
We decided to start off by analyzing the context surrounding us and around the topic of connectedness in that specific moment. Living in the middle of a pandemic where social interactions have drastically declined, we observed that there was a lack of physical contact and the affective feeling that comes with it. From this observation, we then decided to mimic in some way a ritual, part of the physical contact that humans could have. From this evolved the idea of having a representation of the hand holding.
Prends Ma Main, which stands for “hold my hand” in French, is made of 2 physical components and an interactive poster. Each physical component is equipped by one LDR. When a person holds Prends Ma Main, the signal is sent to the poster, which in turn starts changing shapes - communicating thus the feeling of presence, remotely. With this concept and prototype we aimed at creating a feeling of presence and representation of the hand holding not readily available during times of reduced social interaction.
Prends ma main is made of 2 physical components: Huzzah ESP8266 and LDRs (Light sensors) & an interactive poster coded using p5.js, a JavaScript library for creative coding. You can check the check and preview the poster in Glitch.
